It’s that time of year again, Carolina vs Duke. The honeymoon phase of my big boy job wore off by the second week. There are no big Christmas presents, no holiday breaks, and no vacations to look forward to. It’s chilly and overcast. There’s no sun, my girlfriend lives four hours away, and I have to do our mid-month inventory tomorrow.
Now, why am I telling you this?
I’m telling you this because UNC is playing Dook tonight. For a guy like me, this is my Christmas in February (and my Birthday and July 4th and St. Patrick’s Day, all wrapped into one). I can take all my aggression, my frustration, and my annoyances out on those five poor suckers in Puke Blue and their rat of a coach. They dare to step out on Dean Dome Hardwood? I will scream, curse, point, and accuse. Venom will spew and I will throw hands up in the air in joy at every misstep they make.
Sure, I thought about writing an article on the history of the match up slammed full of statistics and acute observations. I even considered writing a background on the Roy and the Dook coach, and how they got to where they are tonight.
At the end of the day though, to me, Carolina-Dook is emotional. It’s not logical. It’s angry.
Why am I getting so emotional, so personal with everything I’m telling you? Because this game is personal. When Gerald Henderson threw that illegal elbow into Hansbrough’s nose, I lost it. I went absolutely bonkers; cursing, pointing, and inundating every social media outlet I was a part of with a fierce, all CAPS, tirade.
I’m no different than any other Tar Heel fan. Today, I give myself the “good-person” free pass. I’m a loyal friend, keep in touch with my grandma at least once a week, and have given money to the homeless on multiple occasions. Tonight, though?
I’m going to get mentally unstable and looking forward to it.
