On the up and up
UNC has a new coach on the field in Larry Fedora, a grizzled coaching veteran on the hardwood in Roy Williams, and a strong baseball team that finished fifth in the nation last season. The Tar Heels athletic program is touting a nice class of 23 new football recruits, to go along with one of the nations top basketball recruiting class.
Football: Fedora did a great job on National Signing Day. No big disappointments, every verbal commitment signed on the dotted line. The day ended well with the Heels hooking WR Quinshad Davis late in the day. Caleb Peterson (a 6’4’’, 300 pound OG), JJ Peterson ( 6’4’’, 310 pound OG), James Summers (has a 4.74 40-yard dash time), Shakeel Rashad (a 6’2’’, 215 pound OLB with a 4.72 40-yard dash time) are all signed with the UNC football squad. The Tar Heels also have hopes of snatching five-star recruit, Devonte’ Neal. So far, there have been 23 commits and four players ranked in the four-star category.
Basketball: Joel James (6’10’’ center), J.P. Tokoto (6’6’’ small forward), Brice Johnson (6’9’’ power forward), Marcus Paige (6’1’’ point guard) all join the Tar Heels’ freshman class and all are four-star recruits on the hardwood and all are in the ESPN top 100 ranking. Top five recruit SF Troy Williams also has UNC high up on his list, as he weighs offers from the Heels, and other heavyweights. 2013 brings two five star recruits in Nate Britt (6’1” point guard) and Isiah Hicks (6’8” power forward) in an already strong class.
Baseball: UNC baseball is ranked number four this preseason in the USA today poll following a 51-16 performance in the 2011 season. They finished tied for fifth in Omaha last year. They are returning the core of their upperclassman in: Colin Moran (3B) who bats .335 with 83 hits, Tommy Coyle (SS) who bats .311 with 57 runs, and Kent Emmanuel who has a 2.33 ERA and had a win-loss record of 9-1 last year. Carolina hosts Xavier in a three-game outing on February 17 this year and looks to go even deeper when Omaha swings around.
There is often so much attention paid to the players in basketball shoes that I forget just how strong the athletic program as a whole is. It looks like we’re only getting stronger, too.
