Who is the best in the ACC?

Of course it’s not even close. North Carolina is definitely the best team in the ACC. This year has proven to be very strange for the ACC. North Carolina is a dominant force, but after that what is there? Duke? NC State? Florida State? Virginia?

Duke: They are not very good at all. When I say not very good, I am judging by Duke standards. Duke usually is a powerhouse. This year, not so much. Do not let that high ranking fool you. This team is very questionable. They have all the talent in the world, however they just do not gel like they should. Duke will be an at large bid in the tournament, however I am looking for an early exit, probably second round.

NC State: This is a team, I would typically shrug off, but they are playing well. At the moment they have a 15-7 overall record. 4-3 in conference play. Now, this is usually how ACC teams do it. They start off with an outrageous record, but conference play usually simmers them down. ACC usually stays competitive. As they are the best basketball conference in the country. Not this year though. I’m fairly certain in the next few years NC State will be coming on strong, but this year I see and NIT bid at best.

Florida State: This team is good. They lack consistency, but they have some HUGE victories against North Carolina and Duke. They actually beat Duke at Cameron Indoor. Which is not a feat easily achieved. Their losses come from the likes of Michigan State, Harvard, Florida and Connecticut. Princeton also beat them in three overtimes. Florida State will squeeze into the tournament. I can see them making a Sweet Sixteen exit.

Virginia: These guys have my sympathy. They are playing well right now. Do I think they are as good as their record shows? No. I think Mike Scott is amazing. However, this guy will not be able to do it alone. I watched the Virginia Tech at Virginia game a little while ago and I did not see anything to be impressed with. It always helps to have an NBA talent like Mike Scott on the floor, but I do not care what anyone says. One person cannot carry a team but so far in College Basketball. I see a late season collapse in Virginia. NIT at best, but I strongly doubt it.

The bottom line is simple. The ACC is a letdown this year. Chances are North Carolina will win the Championship. I feel strongly about that. However, the rest of the ACC is weak. We have three tournament teams at best. Not impressive at all. I am a North Carolina fan, but I take pleasure in seeing the ACC excel as a whole. No matter what the case. If North Carolina wins the Championship, it still doesn’t negate how weak the conference is this season. North Carolina winning the Championship would make my year, but the current state of the ACC is a little bit scary.
